There are mainly two ways to upgrade your Android operating system to the latest version, Official and Non-official (Using Custom ROM). If your smartphone brand provides you upgrade via OTA (Over the Air) you can directly download & install it from the settings otherwise there’s nothing you have except to install custom ROM using TWRP.
Upgrade your Android through OTA
Most Android smartphones hardly get Android upgrades more than one or two times expect flagship-grade smartphones for example Samsung Galaxy, Oneplus, etc. However, if any Android user officially receives updates via OTA, he/she can download & install it directly from the Android’s settings. Here’s how to check if have an OTA update:
- Open Android Phone’s Settings
- Tap About Phone
- Tap System Update or Update

Upgrade your Android OS Using Custom ROM
If you are not a technical person then this method is not for you. These steps are highly sensitive any mistakes could break your Android operating system.
Here’s how to upgrade Android OS using custom ROM
1. Unlock Bootloader
Nowadays every modern smartphone released with the locked bootloader. Which simply doesn’t allow you to flash the custom ROM. 2. Install TWRP

FAQ: Is Root required to Flash Custom ROM or TWRP
