Macs comes with a build-in front-facing camera, also referred as Face Time camera. It is located at the top edge of the screen and it turns on when you open an app that can take photos, record videos, or make video calls.

When you find your MacBook pro camera is not working, the chances are that it is a software- related issue or camera malfunctioning or interruption in the communication between the camera and mac components as a result camera is not working.

The MacOS usually display an error message when your camera is not working like: disconnected or unavailable or no video error message.

Some of the reasons why camera is not working are:

  • Internet communication is slow or not working
  • Software malfunction
  • Camera already is use by another application
  • Incompatible or outdated updates
  • Wear and tear
  • Physical damage
  • Camera settings

There are several steps you can take to make it work:

  1. If the camera is already in use, because only a single application can use the camera at a time. If the access is denied because the camera is already occupied in another application then close that application.
  2. Restart the computer. It can fix any minor issues or bugs and also if any processes are using the camera in the background that you are not able to locate, a restart may fix the issue, providing you full access to the camera once again. Once the computer is back on, check if your camera is functioning.
  3. Restarting any camera app. Close the app and relaunch it.Doing so gives it the chance to load up the settings again and give it a fresh start. However, for some reason, your app may refuse to close then force quit the app.

To do so, follow the steps below:

    • Go to the Apple icon at the top left.
    • Select the ‘Force Quit apps’ option.
    • On the window that appears, select a camera application.
    • Click on the ‘Force Quit button at the bottom right.

To be sure, to kill any other app that you may not know of, that might be using the camera. You will eventually force quit all applications.

5. Make sure that your Mac has the latest version of macOS software installed.

  • Click the System Preferences from the Apple menu and then click Software Update. If there is an update available, click Update Now and follow the onscreen instructions.
  • If you want to get updates for an earlier version of the macOS software (such as macOS High Sierra, Sierra), for this open the App Store on your Mac and then click the Updates tab.

6. Check Screen Time restriction. It is a feature that helps you monitor how you use your Mac. To check if Screen Time restrictions are the problem, Go to System Preferences > Screen Time > Content and Privacy, and then click “Camera.” Make sure “Camera” is enabled under the Apps tab.
