Whatsapp and Telegram both comes under title of messaging apps. But there's lot to explore in both apps.
-:TELEGRAM:-
(1) Telegram is more privacy concerned but is less censored and you can post whatever content you want to post on telegram.
(2) Telegram has huge number of group capacity of almost 2,00,000 (2 lakh members in one individual group.
(3) Telegram allows you to share files with size in GBs. Telegram allows you to go global which means if you search (Movie name) telegram will provide all the channels with that keyword or name of that particular movie.
(4) Telegram does not provide end to end encryption and also mainly focuses on channels which are widely used for business.
(5) Telegram is not broadly used by peoples in general terms.
Some basic features :-
1)- You can hide your number if you want while joining some unknown group. (YES)
2)- You can use different proxy settings in telegram (YES).
3)- You can sign in with social accounts. (YES).
4)- Often used by people to interact with knowns (NO).

-:WHATSAPP:-
(1) Whatsapp is also privacy concerned but from different perspectives telegram do lot better. In whatsapp you don't even get half of the security features telegram has to provide.And whatsapp is sensitive and you might get banned if someone reports you for some illegal activities.
(2) Whatsapp is more focused on quality so here they arw with group capacity of 254 members in one group.
(3) Whatsapp does not allow you to share files with size over 16mb. And in whatsapp if you search any keyword or name you will only get results if those words were used by you or your receiver.
(4) Whatsapp provide end-to-end encryption and is mainly focused for personal chats and personal groups and also for business groups as it is more reliable.
(5) Whatsapp is more reliable compared to telegram and is broadly used because of it's service and user interface.

This was a small number to number comparison between telegram and whatsapp. Indeed both of the apps are good and respectively used for things they known for.
